# How to check your Claude Code and Codex usage limits on a Mac

**Short answer:** In Claude Code, type `/usage` to see how much of your 5-hour session and weekly limits is used and when each resets. claude.ai shows the same under Settings → Usage. In Codex, type `/status` during a session, or open the usage dashboard at chatgpt.com/codex/settings/usage. Claude’s limits are shared by claude.ai, Claude Code and the Claude app. Vitals, a system monitor for the Mac, shows what is left of every plan signed in on your Mac on its Agents tab and in the menu bar, with when each resets and whether you are on pace.

## How to check your limits

1. In Claude Code, type `/usage` and press Return. On a Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise plan it shows a bar for the current 5-hour session and for the weekly limits, and when each resets.
2. In a browser, open claude.ai and choose Settings → Usage. It shows the same session and weekly bars, with the time left in the session.
3. In Codex, type `/status` during a session to see the limits you have left.
4. For Codex in a browser, open chatgpt.com/codex/settings/usage. It shows your current limits and when they reset.

Claude’s limits are shared: a chat on claude.ai and a session in Claude Code use the same session and the same week.

Claude Code and Codex come with a plan, and a plan has limits: a session that resets every five hours, and a week. When one runs out, the agent stops until it resets, often in the middle of a task. Both tools tell you where you stand, but only when you ask, and each only about itself. The table shows each limit and where to see it.

## The limits, and where to see them

| Limit | What it covers | Where to see it |
|---|---|---|
| Claude: the 5-hour session | What you use in the current five-hour session, across claude.ai, Claude Code and the Claude app | `/usage` in Claude Code, or Settings → Usage on claude.ai |
| Claude: the week | A weekly limit for all models, and on some plans one for a single model | The same two places |
| Codex: the 5-hour limit | What you use in the current five hours, on plans that have this limit | `/status` in Codex, or chatgpt.com/codex/settings/usage |
| Codex: the week | A weekly limit, where your plan has one | The same two places |
| “You’ve hit your session limit” | Claude Code has stopped until the session resets | The message gives the time it resets |

## Two limits at once

What you use counts toward the session and the week alike. A busy afternoon can use up the session, which comes back within five hours. A busy few days can use up the week, which does not come back until it resets, and while it is gone a fresh session does not help. The week is the one to watch.

## What uses a limit up faster

In Claude Code, a session that has been open for hours costs more for every question, because the whole conversation goes with each request. After a break of more than an hour, the whole conversation is read again from the start. Subagents, scheduled tasks and agent teams send requests of their own on top. Long sessions also grow in memory: see [Claude Code using too much memory](https://vitalsmac.com/claude-code-memory-usage-mac).

Below the bars, `/usage` lists what used your limits recently: skills, subagents, plugins and each MCP server, each as a share of the total. Press d or w to switch between the last day and the last week. When you move to unrelated work, `/clear` starts afresh and costs nothing.

## When a limit runs out

Claude Code says “You’ve hit your session limit” or “You’ve hit your weekly limit”, with the time it resets. Both are shared across models, so switching models does not bring them back. A model’s own limit is the exception: after “You’ve hit your Opus limit”, switching to a model outside that family keeps you working. With usage credits turned on, work carries on at pay-as-you-go prices. Run `/usage-credits` to manage them.

For Codex, OpenAI’s pricing page says to check the usage dashboard for your current limits and reset times, since they change.

## Several plans, several tools

Each tool tells you about its own plan, and only when you ask: `/usage` in one terminal, `/status` in another, a dashboard in a browser. With Claude Code and Codex, or more than one account, keeping track means checking each in turn, and it is easy to find out only when a limit has already stopped you.

## What Vitals adds

Vitals shows what is left of every AI plan signed in on your Mac, in one place, without asking each tool.

- An Agents tab: how much is left of the week, the 5-hour session and a model’s own limit, and when each resets, for Claude, Codex, GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Antigravity, Grok, Ollama and OpenCode
- Whether you are on pace, or when a limit runs out at the rate you are going
- The tokens Claude Code and Codex used today and this week
- What is left, in the menu bar, turning red when a tenth or less remains
- Every coding agent running, with its project, whether it is waiting for you, and everything it started

Good to know:

- Usage Limits is off until you turn it on in Settings → Integrations. A tool with no sign-in on this Mac is left out.
- Vitals asks each tool’s maker for your usage with the sign-in already on this Mac, the way the tool does itself. It sends nothing else and keeps no copy of the sign-in.
- It shows your limits. It does not change them or buy more.

Vitals is $9 during the launch, $39 after it, once: [vitalsmac.com](https://vitalsmac.com/).

## Questions people ask

### How do I check my Claude Code usage limit?

Type `/usage` in Claude Code. On a paid plan it shows how much of your 5-hour session and weekly limits is used, and when each resets. claude.ai shows the same under Settings → Usage.

### Do Claude Code and claude.ai share the same limit?

Yes. Claude’s help center says everything you do in claude.ai, Claude Code and the Claude app counts toward the same limit.

### How do I see my Codex usage limits?

Type `/status` during a Codex session, or open chatgpt.com/codex/settings/usage for your current limits and when they reset.

### When does the Claude Code limit reset?

The session limit resets every five hours and the weekly limits once a week. `/usage` and Settings → Usage show the exact times.

### Does switching models get around a usage limit?

Not the session or the weekly limit: those are shared across models. A model’s own limit is different: switching to a model outside that family keeps you working.

### Is there an app that shows my Claude Code and Codex limits in the menu bar?

Vitals. Its Agents tab and menu bar item show what is left of each plan signed in on your Mac, Claude, Codex, GitHub Copilot, Cursor and more, with when it resets and whether you are on pace.
