# Claude desktop app using high CPU or memory on a Mac? What to check

**Short answer:** The Claude desktop app is built like a browser, so Activity Monitor shows several processes: Claude, Claude Helper (Renderer) for the window, Claude Helper (GPU), and one process for each local extension or connector you have added. High CPU while you are not using it usually comes from a very long conversation, an extension, or a coding session still at work. Start a new conversation, quit the app fully with ⌘Q, and update it. Vitals, a system monitor for the Mac, shows Claude as one app with its total memory, CPU and energy, and tells you when it holds the CPU for minutes.

## How to find what the Claude app is doing

1. Open Activity Monitor, click CPU, and type Claude in the search field. Claude Helper (Renderer) is the window you see; other rows are the app itself, graphics, and anything it started.
2. In Claude, start a new conversation and close the long one. A conversation with hundreds of messages, large files or long code blocks is the usual reason the Renderer is busy.
3. Quit Claude with ⌘Q, not only by closing its window: the app keeps running in the menu bar after the window closes. Open it again and check whether the CPU has settled.
4. Open Claude’s Settings and look at Extensions and Connectors. Each local one runs as its own process; turn off the ones you do not use and check Activity Monitor again.
5. Update the app: choose Claude → Check for Updates. Fixes for high CPU ship in updates more often than anything you can change yourself.

If the Mac is hot only while Claude is answering, that is the app drawing text as it arrives, and it ends when the answer does. High CPU that goes on while nothing is happening is what the steps above are for.

The Claude app does its thinking on Anthropic’s servers, not on your Mac, so in principle it has little to do: show a conversation and send what you type. What it does locally is draw a long, constantly updating page, run any extensions and connectors you have added, and, if you use it for coding, run sessions that read files and start commands on your Mac. Those three are where the CPU goes. The table matches what you see to what it is.

## What the Claude app’s processes are

| What you see | What it is | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Claude Helper (Renderer) at high CPU | The window: the conversation being drawn | Start a new conversation; quit and reopen the app |
| Claude Helper (Renderer) using several GB | A very long conversation held in memory | Start a new conversation |
| Claude Helper (GPU) busy | Drawing and animation | Brief while text arrives; update if it stays high |
| `node` or other processes under Claude | Local extensions and connectors, one process each | Turn off the ones you do not use |
| Busy with the window closed | The app is still running in the menu bar, or a coding session is | Quit with ⌘Q |

## Long conversations

Every message in a conversation stays on the page, and the page is re-drawn as each new answer arrives. A conversation that has run for days, with pasted files and long code, becomes a very large page, and drawing it costs more with every reply. Starting a new conversation is the single most effective fix, and nothing is lost: the old one stays in the list.

## Extensions, connectors and coding sessions

Connectors that reach a service on the web run on Anthropic’s side and cost your Mac nothing. Local ones are different: each runs as a process on your Mac for as long as the app is open, whether or not a conversation uses it. A handful of them is a few hundred megabytes and the occasional busy process.

Coding in the app goes further. A session reads your project, runs commands and may start a dev server or a test run, and those are ordinary processes that use what they use. If the app is busy while you are away from it, a session still working is the first thing to check. The same applies in a terminal: see [Claude Code using too much memory](https://vitalsmac.com/claude-code-memory-usage-mac).

## Battery

An idle chat window should cost almost nothing. If the Energy tab in Activity Monitor shows Claude near the top over the last 12 hours, something above is keeping it busy. If you only notice the Mac getting warm and are not sure which app it is, start with [what is draining your Mac’s battery](https://vitalsmac.com/mac-battery-draining-fast).

## What Vitals adds

Vitals shows the Claude app as one row, and tells you when it misbehaves.

- Claude as one app with its total memory, CPU and energy, its helpers counted in
- A notification when an app holds the CPU for minutes or its memory keeps growing, so you hear about it before the fans start
- Which app used the most energy, hour by hour and over 30 days
- When the Mac runs hot, the apps behind it, with Quit beside each
- Quit from the menu bar, with Force Quit for an app that does not answer

Good to know:

- Vitals shows what the app uses, not which conversation or extension inside it is the cause.
- Vitals never quits anything by itself.

Vitals is $9 during the launch, $29 after it, once: [vitalsmac.com](https://vitalsmac.com/).

## Questions people ask

### Why is the Claude app using so much CPU on my Mac?

Usually a very long conversation, a local extension or connector, or a coding session still at work. Start a new conversation, quit the app with ⌘Q and open it again, and update it.

### What is Claude Helper (Renderer)?

The process that draws the Claude app’s window. It is busy while an answer arrives, and stays busy when a conversation has grown very long.

### Does Claude run on my Mac or on a server?

The model runs on Anthropic’s servers. Your Mac draws the conversation and runs any local extensions, connectors and coding sessions.

### Why is Claude still running after I close its window?

The app stays in the menu bar so its shortcut keeps working. Press ⌘Q, or choose Quit from its menu bar icon, to stop it.

### Does the Claude app drain a MacBook’s battery?

Not when idle. If it does, a long conversation, an extension or a coding session is keeping it busy. Activity Monitor’s Energy tab shows its share over the last 12 hours.

### Is there an app that tells me when Claude is using too much CPU?

Vitals watches every app and sends a notification when one holds the CPU for minutes or its memory keeps growing, with the app named and Quit one click away.
